Springer Compact: Open Access for Authors

01/14/2016 | TU Graz news | University

By Ute Wiedner

Since January this year, researchers at Graz University of Technology have had the opportunity to use well over 2,000 Springer journals free of charge, and also publish work in them. The basis for this is an agreement made between the Austrian libraries and Springer.

Using the broad-based journal portfolio of SpringerLink open access: An agreement between the Austrian libraries and Springer makes it possible.
As of 1st January, 2016,  the “Springer Compact” licence model entered into force. It was agreed in September last year between the Austrian Library Consortium (Österreichische Bibliothekskonsortium) together with the FWF (Austrian science fund) and Springer publishing house. Staff of the participating universities and universities of applied sciences thus have the opportunity, from 1st January this year,  to use the content of the online information services under SpringerLink for three years free of charge. For researchers, there are no longer any administrative or financial obstacles.

Publishing instead of administering

What is available under this model is not only reading access, but on top of that researchers also have the possibility to publish their research results without any further costs in the broad-based journal portfolio of SpringerLink open access. In terms of figures, this means access to more than 2,000 Springer journals and open publishing in 1,600 publications of the Springer publishing house and other highly renowned publishers who use SpringerLink. In 2014 Springer actually made a similar agreement with Dutch universities. In Great Britain and Germany agreements on the basis of the Springer Compact model are in preparation.
