Welcome Center

When moving to a new place, there are a few things you need to take care of early on. The Welcome Center of TU Graz is designed to help new students start over in Graz with as little difficulty as possible. It offers in-person counselling along with a checklist for all the necessary administrative steps you need to take as a new resident of Graz.

Mobility

In Graz, everything you need is just around the corner. From anywhere in the city, you can reach the campus, the city centre, or the countryside in a matter of minutes. Most places can easily be reached on foot, by bike, or by public transport ‒ no car is needed.

Public transportation

Graz’s public transport network is made up of bus and tram lines. Students up to the age of 26 can get a semester ticket valid throughout Styria. With the Altstadtbim programme, taking the tram between certain stations in the historic city centre is even free: Altstadtbim (“historic city tram”)

You can easily look up all train connections to and from Graz on the website of the ÖBB, the Austrian Federal Railways. ÖBB offers a Vorteilscard (discount card); this card gives you a 50% discount on ÖBB standard tickets. If you have made Graz your primary place of residence by submitting the necessary paperwork to the municipal administration, you can purchase the KlimaTicket Steiermark (climate ticket for Styria) at a discount. This ticket is valid on all public transport including trains.

Getting to TU Graz

TU Graz is divided into three campus locations, all of which are near the city centre and easily accessible by bike and public transport:

Activities

As a university city, Graz offers numerous possibilities for you to pursue your interests and network. The many large green spaces all over the city are open for anyone to do sports or sit in the grass and relax ‒ either alone or as a group. Also, the vibrant cultural and nightlife scene of Graz will surely pique your interest.

Leisure Activities

Music

Do you enjoy singing with others? The Graz University Choir meets weekly for rehearsals and hosts a final concert at the end of each semester.

Do you like to play in an orchestra? The Graz University Orchestra and the Grazer BläserVielharmoniE symphonic wind orchestra are looking for new musicians at the beginning of each semester. Their activities include rehearsals and concerts as well as concert tours.

 

Sports

Do you want to take sports courses? The University Sports Centre (USI) Graz offers a wide range of courses that you can register for before the start of the semester.

Do you love nature and alpine sports? The Graz Academic Section of the Österreichische Alpenverein (ÖAV), the Austrian Alpine Club, organises various activities and courses for hiking, mountain climbing, mountain biking, and ski trips.

Student teams

You can join a variety of student initiatives and associations to gain unique professional experiences. These teams develop innovative technologies, participate in competitions, and promote exchange with economy, industry, and research. All TU Graz student teams

TU Graz offers students free language training, including courses in nine languages ​​at various levels. Students can also acquire soft skills in various fields through free-choice subjects. 

 

Global connections

TU Graz’s International House is a meeting place for our students and employees from all over the world. Whether cooking together, studying, playing games, or simply chatting – there are many opportunities to network and become acquainted.

Health and Social Affairs

Healthcare

The Austrian healthcare system offers excellent medical care for all residents of Austria. Graz has numerous pharmacies, doctors, and hospitals. Detailed information on healthcare services and mandatory health insurance is available at the TU Graz Welcome Center.

 

Family and childcare

We support students and staff moving to Graz with their families with information about various childcare options and financial support for parents and children. Childcare
