Overview: Teacher Education Programme

The Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (General Education) is subdivided into a bachelor’s and master’s programme. You choose two subjects according to your personal interests or combine one subject with a specialisation.

TU Graz offers the subjects Descriptive Geometry and Computer Science and Digital Education. If you choose at least one of these subjects, you can register to study at TU Graz in the Teacher Education for Secondary Schools.

The subjects offered at the TU Graz can be combined with subjects from other institutions. All subjects and institutions can be found on the website Lehramt Süd-Ost (teacher training programmes south-east) in German.

Bachelor Programme for Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (General Education)

In the bachelor’s programme, you will acquire comprehensive knowledge in the subjects of your choice. In addition, you gain specialised didactic knowledge on planning lessons and gather initial teaching experience.

Structure of the study programme

  • Fundamental aspects of educational sciences: 40 ECTS
  • Teaching subject 1: 95 ECTS
  • Teaching subject 2 or specialisation: 95 ECTS
  • Bachelor's thesis: 5 ECTS
  • Free-choice subject: 5 ECTS

Total: 240 ECTS

Admission Procedure

Students have to complete a general admission procedure for teacher training programmes before registering for the degree programme.
You register for the admission procedure on the registration portal for teacher training programmes.

Registration for the 2024 admission procedure is possible from 1 March 2024!

You can begin your degree programme in the winter or summer semester, however, you must have completed the admission procedure of the respective academic year.

You can take the entire admission procedure either on the main period or on the additional period. It is not possible to take parts of the admission procedure on the main date and other parts on the second date.

After having completed the admission procedure successfully, you can register for your degree programme at TU Graz.

After the Bachelor’s Programme

After successfully completing your bachelor's programme, you can register for the subsequent master’s programme to obtain the teaching qualification in the subjects of your choice.

In addition, graduating from the bachelor’s programme already qualifies you for a number of educational occupations in general and vocational education as well as in extracurricular educational institutions.

Master Programme for Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (General Education)

In the master's programme, you deepen your knowledge on the subjects of your choice. In addition, you further expand your didactic knowledge and gain teaching experience in specialist internships.

Structure of the study programme

  • Fundamental aspects of educational sciences: 20 ECTS
  • Teaching subject 1: 20 ECTS
  • Teaching subject 2 or specialisation: 20 ECTS
  • Master's thesis: 20 ECTS
  • Final examination before a committee: 5 ECTS
  • Free-choice subject: 5 ECTS
  • Internship and traineeship at a school/extracurricular institution: 30 ECTS

  • Admission requirements:
    • Completion of the Bachelor Degree Programme for Teacher Education for Secondary Schools (General Education) or
    • Completion of an equivalent programme at a foreign university or
    • Completion of a six-semester bachelor's degree programme in education at a college of education in conjunction with an extension curriculum.

      You can only choose subjects or specialisations in which you have already completed your bachelor's degree programme.

Career Options

Graduates of the master’s degree programme are qualified to teach their chosen subjects at the following schools:

  • General secondary grammar schools (AHS),
  • Lower secondary education New Middle School (NMS) and
  • Higher and lower secondary education vocational schools (BMHS), e.g. pre-vocational schools, vocational schools, higher commercial education institutes (HAK), commercial schools (HAS), higher technical education institutes (HTL) or higher federal education institutes for business professions (HLW).

In addition, graduating from the master’s programme qualifies you for a number of educational occupations in general and vocational education as well as in extracurricular educational institutions.
