Campus Inffeldgasse is the largest of TU Graz’s three campuses and will continue to grow in the coming decades. A master plan was drawn up as the basis for this future urban development. In addition to more space for teaching, learning and research, this will also open up the campus more. With thoroughfares for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport and extensive green spaces and public sports areas for the entire neighbourhood, the site will become a district centre where people enjoy spending time.
Over the next few years and decades, TU Graz and Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft (BIG) will continue to develop Campus Inffeldgasse together with the Ministry of Science. The Campus is meant to become a genuine district centre. This means that the entire planning area is included in the urban planning considerations. In addition to structural extensions and the opening of the Campus to the outside, urban qualities such as green and open spaces, thoroughfares, good accessibility and leisure and catering facilities are also taken into account. Campus Inffeldgasse is creating more space for research and infrastructure and for first-class university education as well as for start-ups and associated companies. According to the forecast, by 2040, around 10,000 people will be conducting research and working and studying on the campus area.
Green spaces, thoroughfares and public transport
Campus Inffeldgasse aims to become part of everyday life in the district and this will bring a whole range of benefits for local residents and the entire neighbourhood. Green spaces and a “green heart” are being created. A public sports field will offer opportunities for leisure activities. A “green network” with footpaths and cycle paths will create a pedestrian and cycle-friendly campus with a high quality of stay. Facilities for pedestrians and cyclists will be optimised and expanded. The cycle paths on the campus are to be integrated even more closely into the urban cycle path network and optimal accessibility of the district by public transport is to be achieved.
The Campus is becoming more visible
The expansion of Campus Inffeldgasse will create more space for pioneering research in civil engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering and process engineering. Research is being conducted into solutions for major societal challenges such as future forms of mobility, hydrogen and storage technologies, smart forms of production, sustainable construction and the security of IT systems. In addition, an attractive technical and social infrastructure for teaching and learning is being created. In addition to traditional university use, the planned development of the Campus also envisages the establishment of companies as well as attractive gastronomy facilities, retail outlets and recreational sports activities. Better networking will also make the Campus more visible within the city.
Currently planned buildings on Campus Inffeldgasse:
- Cybersecurity Campus Graz: The Cybersecurity Campus Graz, which is being built in Sandgasse and recently celebrated its ground-breaking ceremony, is already being realised.
- Lecture hall centre: The lecture hall centre is intended to create a modern teaching and learning environment for students and lecturers and promote cooperative study.
- NAWI Graz Geocenter: The NAWI Graz Geocenter will be a unique inter-university centre in Austria, combining earth sciences and geotechnics and contributing to the further development of the disciplines represented in research and teaching and making the location even more visible internationally.
- Production technology centre 2 (PTZ): Research into state-of-the-art production technologies and innovative materials as well as the latest teaching infrastructure are to be accommodated in a new production technology centre on campus.
From the TU Graz charter for the further development of Campus Inffeldgasse:
We make it possible to study, conduct research, work, take breaks and enjoy leisure time in a relaxed green environment with many meeting places on an open campus, which as part of the city is a strong role model for sustainability.
