Degree Programme Groups

You will receive the general university entrance qualification for one of the following degree programme groups:

  • Engineering sciences programmes
  • Natural sciences programmes
  • Teacher education programmes

After passing the university entrance qualification exam, you can enrol in any degree programme in the degree programme group at any Austrian university offering the programme.

Registering for the University Entrance Qualification Exam

You can take the university entrance qualification exam if you

  • are aged 20 or above;
  • are an EU or EEA citizen or belong to a group of persons in accordance with the Regulation on Eligible Groups of Persons (Personengruppenverordnung), and
  • can provide proof of a successful vocational or non-vocational preparatory education for your preferred degree programme.

You can register for the university entrance qualification exam with the application form for admission (in German: Antrag auf Zulassung zur Studienberechtigungsprüfung) in person or by post to the TU Graz Registrar's Office.

Procedure

  1. Fill out the application form for admission (in German: Antrag auf Zulassung zur Studienberechtigungsprüfung) completely.
  2. In addition, you require the following documents in the original or as a certified copy:
    • your certificate of citizenship or passport;
    • proof of your preparatory education, and
    • your curriculum vitae, including, in particular, your previous education.
  3. Submit your application and all the documents in person or by post to the TU Graz Registrar's Office.
  4. The Vice Rector for Academic Affairs will make the decision on your admission by means of an assessment by division heads appointed by the faculty.
  5. You will receive a notice of the decision.

Content

You complete five individual examinations:

  • a written assignment on a general topic;
  • three compulsory subjects, and
  • one elective subject from the area of the degree programme for which you are applying.

You can find the compulsory subjects for each degree programme group and the examination methods in the annex to the Regulations of the Rectorate on the university entrance qualification exam (in German:Verordnung des Rektorates über die Studienberechtigungsprüfung).

Preparation

You can revise independently for the university entrance qualification exam or attend a preparatory course.

The University of Graz offers a preparatory course for the university entrance qualification exam.

Registering for Examination Subjects

Register before the relevant deadline at the TU Graz Registrar's Office for one or several examination subjects.

Written assignment on a general topic

This examination takes place at the University of Graz. You can find the examination dates on the University of Graz website.
Please send your registration for the examination by email to the TU Graz Registrar's Office.

Compulsory subjects

You can send your registration for a compulsory subject by email to the TU Graz Registrar's Office until the deadline for the relevant examination period.

Elective subject

Please arrange the date for the elective subject examination directly with the examiner for the elective subject. Please then inform the TU Graz Registrar's Office by email of your examination date.

Examination Periods

Winter semester 2024/2025:

1st examination period: 16 September to 7 October 2024
Registration deadline: 26 August 2024

2nd examination period: 13 January to 27 January 2025
Registration deadline: 16 December 2024

Summer semester 2025:

1st examination period: 3 March to 17 March 2025
Registration deadline: 10 February 2025

2nd examination period: 23 June to 7 July 2025
Registration deadline: 2 June 2025

Retaking Examinations

You can retake each of the five individual examinations twice, i.e. you can take the examination three times in total. The second retake is an examination before a committee.

Recognition

It is possible for other examinations that you have already passed to be recognised. You can find further information in the Regulation by the Rectorate of TU Graz on the university entrance qualification exam (in German: Verordnung des Rektorates über die Studienberechtigungsprüfung).

University Entrance Qualification Certificate

When you have passed all five examination subjects, you will receive a university entrance qualification certificate for the relevant degree programme group. You can enrol in any degree programme in the degree programme group at any Austrian university offering the programme.
