Major Communications and Mobile Computing

From smartphones to the Internet of Things and nano-satellites - wireless networks for mobile data processing are indispensable today. Our society depends on these systems to function reliably even in difficult and interference-prone environments. TU Graz offers cutting-edge research and first-class education in the field of reliable mobile communication and data processing, working closely with partners such as NxP, Infineon and AT&S.

To acquire this specialist knowledge, you can complete the major in Communications and Mobile Computing as part of the following master’s degree programme:

  • Information and Computer Engineering
    Are you interested in how future vehicles and other embedded systems can co-operate with each other in a network? Combine your Major in Communications and Mobile Computing with a minor in Embedded & Automotive Systems or another field of computer science!

The major includes at least 40 ECTS credits.

Communications and Mobile Computing in Degree Programmes

Content of the Major

The Communications and Mobile Computing major is based on four key research areas. The courses take you from the fundamentals to cutting-edge research and impactful applications:

  • Wireless Communications: Understanding of radio technologies and signal design for 5G/6G networks and nanosatellites; development of algorithms for signal processing; design of energy-efficient radio components.
  • Wireless Networks: Design of reliable protocols for low-power mesh networks; development of algorithms for precise positioning and robust communication in disturbed environments.
  • Mobile Computing: Working with cutting-edge microcontrollers; development of energy-aware real-time systems and distributed algorithms for device collaboration.
  • Applications: Use of mobile computing and communication in smart factories, connected vehicles, drones, nanosatellites as well as identification and payment systems.

Communications and Mobile Computing Research

Research Areas

The Institute of Technical Informatics researches energy-efficient wireless networks for the Internet of Things as well as machine learning methods for microcontrollers. Communication technologies, especially for nanosatellites, are researched at the Institute of Communication Networks and Satellite Communications. The Institute of Microwave and Photonic Engineering, investigates antennas and filters for radar and RFID systems. The foundations of radio wave propagation are studied at the Institute of Fundamentals and Theory in Electrical Engineering. And finally, the Institute of Signal Processing and Voice Communication deals with the signal processing of radio signals.

 

Selected Research Projects
