As a prospective student, it’s essential to understand the language requirements and the support available to help you achieve them. Student Jakov Vujović provides answers to frequent questions.

At TU Graz, proficiency in German at the C1 level is required for admission to degree programmes taught in German. This ensures that students can fully engage with the coursework and participate in academic life.
If you’re starting from a lower level, don’t worry! The Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalisation or OeAD in short offers the University Preparation Programme, which provides intensive German courses to help you reach the necessary proficiency. With dedication and the right resources, you can achieve the language skills needed to succeed in your studies.

Frequently Asked Questions by Prospective Students of TU Graz

1. What level of German is required and what certificates are needed?

To enroll in a degree programme taught in German at TU Graz, you need to demonstrate proficiency in German at the C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Accepted certificates can be found here and include the Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD), Goethe Certificate, TestDaF, and others.

2. Is it difficult to learn German?

I know exactly how it feels to start learning German from scratch. From my own personal experience, I can confidently say that with enough motivation and dedication, anyone can become proficient in the language. While it may seem challenging at first, TU Graz offers excellent support through language courses and the OeAD University Preparation Programme to help you along the way.

3. Can I apply if I don’t have C1 in German?

Yes, you can apply even if you don’t have C1 proficiency yet. TU Graz allows you to register as a non-degree student with at least A2 level in German. You can then improve your language skills through the University Preparation Programme until you reach the required C1 level.

4. What is the language level required? Is German A2 sufficient to start my studies?

While A2 is sufficient to enroll as a non-degree student, you must eventually achieve C1 proficiency to enroll as regular student in a degree programme to be able to actually start with your studies. The University Preparation Programme helps bridge this gap by offering intensive German courses.

With level A2 in German, you will be enrolled as a non-degree student. Level C1 is however required to enroll in degree programmes taught in German.

5. How does the University Preparation Programme Graz work?

The University Preparation Programme Graz (VGUH) offers intensive courses in German and other subjects to help international students meet the university’s admission requirements. At very low cost, the programme includes placement tests, regular courses, and examinations to ensure students reach the necessary proficiency levels.
