Proof of German Language Competence

German language proficiency at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for languages (CEFR) is an admission requirement for a degree programme taught in German at TU Graz.

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student with German language competence at level A2 until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1.

Certificates

When you submit your Application for Admission to study at TU Graz, you must include one of the following certificates.

Certificates

The following apply as evidence:

  1. A language certificate, no more than two years old at the time of application, which shows that the reading, listening, speaking and writing sections have each been successfully completed at German C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Suitable language certificates are in any case
    • Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD)
    • Goethe certificate
    • German language examination for university entrance (DSH)
    • German Language Diploma of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (DSD)
    • Telc Certificate German C1
    • TestDaF of the Society for Academic Study Preparation and Test Development (at least TDN4 in all four parts)
  2. Certificate of completion of a pre-study programme at an Austrian university at language level German-C1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
  3. Completion of the school-leaving examination at a German-speaking school (German as the language of instruction and examination) or an Austrian or German school abroad
  4. Completion of a degree programme in German as the language of instruction or if the corresponding Diploma Supplement shows that the degree programme was taught at least in the German language of instruction

Admission Without German Language Proficiency at level C1

If your proficiency in German has not yet reached the required level C1, then you can register at TU Graz as a non-degree student until you are able to document German language competence at the required level C1. You are required to proof German language proficiency at level A2 or higher at the time when you submit your application.

  1. A language certificate, no more than two years old at the time of application, which shows that the reading, listening, speaking and writing sections have each been successfully completed at German A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
    Suitable language certificates are in any case:
    • Austrian German Language Diploma (ÖSD)
    • Goethe Certificate
    • German Language Diploma of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (DSD)
    • German language examination for university entrance (DSH)
    • Language certificate of the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF)
    • German Test for Austria (DTÖ)
    • Telc Certificate German A2
    • TestDaF of the Society for Academic Study Preparation and test development
  2. Course confirmation of a pre-study programme at an Austrian university or college at the German A2 language level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

If proof of knowledge of the German language at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages cannot be provided, the application for admission to degree programmes offered in German must be rejected.

Procedure

  1. TU Graz gives you a provisional notice of admission which includes, as a condition for completing your admission, the requirement to take the Supplementary Examination in German of the University Preparation Programme Graz.
  2. with your notice of admission issued by TU Graz, you enrol personally in the general admission period at the University Preparation Programme of the Graz universities.
  3. The Registrar's Office of TU Graz receives your data online from University Preparation Programme of the Graz universities. After your admission you will be informed by e-mail about all further steps and enrolled as a non-degree student within the general admission period.
  4. You take the Supplementary Examination in German within the deadline specified in your provisional notice of admission to TU Graz.
  5. When you have passed the Supplementary Examination in German, send the corresponding certificate and a scan of the notice you received about your admission within the general admission deadline by e-mail to:
    admission.bachelornoSpam@tugraz.at (admission to the Bachelor's programme)
    admission.masternoSpam@tugraz.at (admission to the Master's programme in German).
    Afterwards, you will be enrolled in the regular degree programme (according to the notice of admission).
