  • Language of instruction: German

The Master's Programme

Digital methods and environmentally relevant aspects are having increasingly strong impacts in the construction industry. For this reason, in your studies you have a chance to try out the latest software programs used for project planning and execution, risk assessment and virtualization. As well as all of these tools for Business Information Modelling (BIM), you will learn how to apply simulation models for business management and use lean management methods in the construction industry to increase efficiency in construction projects and reduce costs. TU Graz is a teaching and research leader in this field of construction management in German-speaking countries.

Other ongoing research projects address agile modelling and digitalization, systemic knowledge management and the use of neural networks in construction management and the construction industry.

This engineering education comprises a compulsory subject entitled "Methods in the Construction Industry" and three elective subject bundles that allow in-depth specialization:

  1. Construction operation and management
  2. Economics
  3. Complementary subject: Civil Engineering

In the 3rd semester, you will complete a master's project, and you will write your master's thesis in the 4th semester. In order to give you the opportunity to pursue an international career, selected courses in the degree programme are held in English.

Focus Areas

Compulsory subject "Methods of the Construction Industry": The courses in this compulsory subject provide you with a solid knowledge base that enables you to understand the leading processes in construction and the construction industry. The compulsory subject places one focus on work planning topics and methods. Other courses address, among other things, how construction services are tendered, awarded and invoiced and how to perform risk assessment.

Elective subject "Construction Operation Management": The research-based courses in this elective area form the second pillar of content in the degree programme. Here, you will deepen your knowledge about costing, tendering and awarding, construction operations, project management, corporate management and construction contracting. You will you’re your skills at thinking in terms of networks by examining buildings in all project phases. This content is supplemented by topics such as facility management and technical building equipment.

Elective subject "Economic Sciences": This elective emphasizes economic aspects, ranging from providing an overview of economics to special business administration topics for construction companies.

Complementary subject "Civil Engineering": The subjects in the third elective catalogue underline the technical aspects of construction projects and broaden your knowledge of engineering.

Career Prospects

Professional Fields

Digitalization, climate change and the need to conserve resources are sending shockwaves through the construction industry. As a programme graduate, you will have theoretical knowledge and practical competence that will enable you to overcome these challenges and carve out a career in industry, engineering offices, public administration, or research institutions.

Programme graduates are active in management areas in construction, economic and ecological fields and are in high demand with international construction companies.

Graduates work nationally and internationally

  • in engineering firms,
  • with public authorities,
  • at consulting firms,
  • in the industry,
  • in the construction industry,
  • for the railroad authorities,
  • at the post office,
  • with insurance companies,
  • in the energy industry,
  • in research and teaching, or
  • in development aid.

By taking a wide range of courses and completing the interdisciplinary exercises, I learned to connect topics in the individual fields and to truly understand the implications of these connections. This has brought me enormous added value in my career, which means that today I can advise companies in the field of building information modeling (BIM).

As a senior BIM consultant and trainer at the German software company Mensch und Maschine GmbH, I am a member of the BIM expert team and advise companies during their BIM strategy development. In addition to conducting training activities, placing a focus on BIM methodology and BIM management, I am dedicated to supporting the application of the BIM method in a wide variety of companies.
