The two guest lectures by Panayiotis Papadopoulos, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, are intended to offer an introduction to a continuum-on-continuum homogenization theory informed by the concept of extensivity and motivated by the classical statistical mechanics-based homogenization approach of Irving and Kirkwood. The first lecture will provide a concise introduction to essential concepts of statistical thermophysics and then discuss the work of Irving and Kirkwood put in the more general context of continuum thermomechanics. The second lecture will explore the role of angular momentum and revisit the homogenized continuum as a polar medium. In addition, the second lecture will address applications of the theory in elastostatics and elastodynamics.
