Ethics Committee

TU Graz established an ethics committee with the resolution of the guideline for safeguarding good scientific practice of 16 January 2024.

Aware of the significant importance of ethics committees at universities and in particular due to the increasing need for assessments of the ethical justifiability of scientific research projects and publications, Graz University of Technology is thus emphasising its social responsibility as a renowned research institution.

 

Tasks of the Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee

  1. decides on the ethical justifiability of scientific publications and research projects as well as research funding topics,
  2. advises university management bodies on ethically relevant topics at TU Graz and
  3. promotes awareness of ethical issues at TU Graz.

Members

The Ethics Committee consists of five internal and two external members. The internal members come from the Fields of Expertise (FoE) and the external members from the Ethics/Philosophy and Law departments. The current term of office runs from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2027.

Presentation of the members

Univ.-Prof. Mag.phil. Dr.theol. Thomas GREMSL (Chairman)
Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Thomas Gremsl is a Professor of Ethics and Social Studies and the Head of the Institute for Ethics and Social Studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Graz. His research focuses primarily on social ethics, the ethics of digitalisation and technology (especially artificial intelligence and socio-technical systems), media ethics, and sports ethics (particularly football).

 

Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr.iur. Elisabeth STAUDEGGER (Deputy)
Dr. Elisabeth Staudegger is professor for IT-law and legal informatics at the law faculty at the University of Graz. She is head of the section “Law and IT“ and co-founder of the interdisciplinary research network „Human Factor in Digital Transformation“ (HFDT); she is also speaker of the HFDT-Consortium at the Doctoral Academy Graz university.

 

Ass.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.phil. Günter GETZINGER (FoE Sustainable Systems)
Ass.Prof. Dipl.-ing. Dr. Günter Getzinger studied chemical engineering, philosophy and social science at TU Graz and University of Graz; he is heading the Science, Technology and Society Unit (STS) of the Institute of Interactive Systems and Data Science at TU Graz, and gives courses on sustainability management, sustainable technology design, technology assessment, ethics of technology, and technology policy.
In his research, he recently focuses on aspects of the sustainability-transition of socio-technical systems, mainly mobility and energy system, strategies of decarbonization, technology assessment and ethics in science and technology (see: www.sts.tugraz.at); he is member of the TU Graz Field of Expertise “Sustainable Systems“.

 

Assoc.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Prof.h.c. Christian LANDSCHÜTZER (FoE Mobility & Production)
Assoc.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Prof. h.c. Christian Landschützer has been working at the Institute of Logistics Engineering since 2000, and he is now a professor and deputy head of the institute there, thus belonging to the FoE Mobility & Production. The ethical dimension is ingrained in him not only due to his voluntary service as a deacon in the Catholic Church. Professionally, he focuses on virtual engineering for the development and optimization of material flow technology.

 

Dr.techn. Bernhard GADERMAIER, BSc MSc (FoE Advanced Materials Science)
Dr. techn. Bernhard Gadermaier is a senior scientist at the Institute for Chemistry and Technology of Materials that is associated with the FoE Advanced Materials Science. He focuses on researching solid electrolytes and electrodes, utilizing various spectroscopic methods and X-ray diffraction. He has been involved in multiple projects and publications related to ionic conductivity and lithium batteries. His work explores innovative approaches to material science, including the use of biotemplates in synthesizing battery materials.

 

Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Martin HAGMÜLLER (FoE Information, Communication & Computing)
Martin Hagmüller, an expert for disordered voices, speech, and audio processing and has published with international research and national clinical partners. He has lead and participated in several projects funded by EU, FWF, and FFG. He was national coordinator of the EU COST action ‘Advanced Voice Function Assessment’ and has lead the FEMTech Project ‘HumanEVoice’, which focused on gender issues in speaking aids for female laryngectomees. Field of Expertise: Information, Communication & Computing.

 

Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.nat. habil. Leila TAHER (FoE Human & Biotechnology)
Leila Taher is Professor of Bioinformatics and Head of the Institute of Biomedical Informatics at Graz University of Technology. Her research is located in the Field of Expertise "Human & Biotechnology" and focuses on computational genomics.
