Creativity is a popular concept, but lay conceptions about its causes and conditions are often informed by anecdotal reports. This presentation examines some popular conceptions about creativity such as the relevance of the right brain, the role of spontaneous insight, higher creativity in children, or facilitative effects of alcohol in the context of available empirical evidence. The presented findings are further considered to derive implications for supporting creativity in scientific work.
At the upcoming BioTechMed-Graz Science Breakfast, Mathias Benedek, Head of the Creative Cognition Lab, a subsection of the Psychology Department at the University of Graz, will give a lecture on myths and facts about creativity.
