Alexander Loder from the Performance and Quality Management at the University of Graz will give a talk on “Data Storytelling”: The more data-driven research and society gets, the more important become data presentation skills. Copying and pasting a colorful bar chart of your research findings onto a Powerpoint slide and meticulously explaining your key findings may earn you immediate applause from your audience, but does it make a lasting impression? How many presentations, be it on paper or as part of an audience, can you recall in your head on demand? In roughly an hour, you will learn about why you cannot trust your brain, how (not) to lie with numbers and statistics, what a good plot needs, the communication and presentation skills you should be training and what an exploding church has to do with all of this. Most importantly, you will learn that data storytelling can and should be fun, for both researchers and recipients.
