The general admission period for Bachelor’s degree programmes without a separate admission procedure is open until 5 September. This is how long prospective first-semester students have in order to complete all the necessary formalities before starting their studies. At TU Graz these are:
- online pre-registration, where all the necessary personal data is entered into an online form,
- in-person admission at the Registrar’s Office at Rechbauerstraße 12 and
- the activation of your student account.
The admission deadline for Bachelor’s degree programmes which have separate admission procedures, such as Architecture, Electrical Engineering and Audio Engineering, and Molecular Biology is 31 October, but please note that these admission procedures start much earlier. All dates and deadlines for the admission procedures are listed on the website of the respective Bachelor’s degree programme.

Registering for your studies: Students share their experience
For newcomers to the university, there are many questions about the registration process. How exactly does in-person enrolment work? How long will my degree programme take in real time? How, when and for which courses should I register? Are there any special features if I have chosen a NAWI Graz degree programme that is jointly organised by TU Graz and the University of Graz? Can I prepare for my degree programme at the university? Can I get any financial assistance for my studies? And how do I find a flat?
For all of these questions, the TU Graz Student Union (HTU Graz) will be offering advice throughout the summer until 5 September from Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 12 noon in front of the Registrar’s Office in Rechbauerstraße 12 LINK. Students answer questions about studying and starting a degree programme here.
Insider tips for starting your studies at university
The News+Stories editorial team spoke to a first-semester advisor to get some tips for first-semester students.
Electronic pre-registration
Complete ALL the steps of the online pre-registration before in-person admission at the Registrar’s Office, i.e. create a basic account in the TUGRAZonline campus management system AND once you have received the activation link complete the pre-registration for the degree programme by using the “Applications” function on the TUGRAZonline business card. Good to know: the application can still be edited afterwards. Instructions for online pre-registration can be found on the TU Graz website.
Tip: A photo must be uploaded as part of the application. This will later be printed on the student ID card, the TUGRAZcard. It is advisable to upload the photo straight away because only then will you be able to get your student ID card during the in-person admission procedure at the Registrar’s Office. The photo of the basic account cannot be accessed.
Electronic pre-registration for NAWI Graz students: If you have decided to study in the framework of the NAWI Graz cooperation between TU Graz and the University of Graz, you will only enrol at one of the two universities, but you must activate the accounts of both universities, the one in the UNIGRAZonline system and the one in the TUGRAZonline system. Please note: the PIN code for activating the SECOND account will be sent to your private e-mail address one to two weeks after activation of the basic account in the system of the home university..
In-person admission procedure
Before going to the Registrar’s Office, make sure you check which documents you need to bring with you. Make sure you bring your school-leaving certificate and all other documents with you in the original or as a certified copy; a photo is not sufficient. Details about in-person admission on the TU Graz website.
For admission it is necessary to come in person to the Registrar’s Office of TU Graz at Rechbauerstraße 12.
Tuition fee and Student Union fee
Both can only be paid in by telebanking or at the bank using the payment slip handed out at the time of in-person admission. Payment at the Registrar’s Office is not possible.
Activating your student account
The confirmation of admission and a PIN code will only be sent to the e-mail address provided during pre-registration once the tuition fee and Student Union fee have been paid. Depending on the payment method, this can take up to four days. Use the PIN code to set up your TUGRAZonline student account.
Activating your student account is an important step in organising your studies. Courses can be registered for or cancelled via your student account, the course calendar can be found there, and students can use their login details to log into the computers in the learning areas on campus. The registration data are also valid for the online TeachCenter of TU Graz.
Planning your studies
The study plan, also known as the curriculum, provides an overview of all the work that must be done in order to successfully complete the entire degree programme. If you want to create a specific timetable for the coming semester, it is best to stick to the semester plan. It lists the courses that are recommended for a particular semester of a degree programme. You can find the details of the semester plan in TUGRAZonline under the respective study programme.
Students can gain an insight into the TUGRAZonline information management system and many other TU Graz services during the Welcome Days – the introductory days at the start of your studies.
Confirmation for the tax office
The tax office confirmation can only be printed out via the student account of the respective home university; it is not available during the in-person admission procedure at the Registrar’s Office. Normally, TU Graz is the home university, but the University of Graz can also be the home university for NAWI Graz programmes.
Preparing yourself before starting your studies
There is a wide range of free offers to prepare you for your studies. Many of these are time and location-independent online courses, so-called MOOCs, for example in the fields of mathematics, computer science, programming or mechanics. No matter what kind of school you come from, these courses are definitely recommended (depending on your field of study).
An overview of the preparatory courses can be found on the website Information for New Students.

It costs 187 euros per semester, i.e. 374 euros per year.
