Vision-based robotic perception: are we there yet?

Margarita Chli (ETH Zurich & University of Cyprus)

Rechbauerstraße 12, 8010 Graz
Talk is held in English.

Abstract

As vision plays a key role in how we interpret a situation, developing vision-based perception for robots promises to be a big step towards robotic navigation and intelligence, with a tremendous impact on automating robot navigation. This talk will discuss our recent progress in this area at the Vision for Robotics Lab of ETH Zurich and the University of Cyprus (http://www.v4rl.com), and some of the biggest challenges we are faced with.

Bio

Margarita Chli is a Professor in Robotic Vision and director of the Vision for Robotics Lab, at the University of Cyprus and ETH Zurich. Her work has contributed to the first vision-based autonomous flight of a small drone and the demonstration of collaborative robotic perception for a small swarm of drones. Margarita has given invited keynotes at the World Economic Forum in Davos, TEDx, and ICRA, and she was featured in Robohub's 2016 list of "25 women in Robotics you need to know about". In 2023 she won the ERC Consolidator Grant, one of the most prestigious grants in Europe for blue-sky research, to grow her team at the University of Cyprus to research advanced robotic perception.

After the talk, four students had the opportunity to take part in the Speaker's Dinner with Margarita Chli.

After a very interesting talk about vision-based robotic perception, I and three other female students were invited to have dinner with Margarita to introduce her to our culinary on the one hand and on the other hand to ask her questions and to find out more about her career and her personal development. She encouraged us to stay true to our interests and to also take risks to realize ourselves and to broaden our horizons.

I was really impressed by how she manages her career, her personal life and also setbacks. And I really enjoyed her being interested on our future plans and our interests - motivating and shaping young students at the start of a potential career in science. Her charm and her empathy led to a relaxed atmosphere and a worthwhile evening. Thank you for the great time and your advice! -Clara Liebmann-Reindl
