The European Artificial Intelligence Act is an important instrument designed to promote the responsible use of AI, prevent misuse, and cultivate a safe society for all Europeans. The AI Act is of particular relevance for developers and users of affective systems, as the regulation contains explicit provisions about emotion recognition, i.e. the assessment of a person’s emotion based on biometric data. The AI Act regards this as ‘high risk’ and even prohibits emotion recognition in the workplace or in education. This can potentially hinder innovations that could significantly enhance comfort, wellbeing and health of users. Representatives of the field of affective computing are in communication with the European Commission’s AI Office, to advise them on the wording of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the AI Act. It is in everybody’s interest that Europe can reap the benefits of these promising technologies while risks are mitigated.

With the Speaker's Lunch/Dinner, our faculty offers a unique opportunity for students from the Dean's List ranking to meet renowned scientists. The relaxed atmosphere encourages open conversations and allows students to ask questions, exchange views on current research topics and build a strong professional network. By engaging directly with leading academics, students can gain valuable advice and perspectives to help them achieve their career goals and pursue their academic interests. The Speaker's Dinner/Lunch is thus an enriching addition to the regular study routine and helps to support students on their way to becoming successful and well-connected professionals in the field of Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering.
Four students had the opportunity to take part in the Speaker's Lunch with Lucas Noldus.
