Two new institutes at CSBME

As part of our new faculty structure from January 2025, we are pleased to announce that two new institutes have been founded: IVC and ATCS.

Institute of Visual Computing (IVC)

The new institute is a merger of the former well-known Institutes of Computer Graphics and Vision (ICG) and Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization (CGV).

Our new institute will comprise around 100 researchers working on all aspects of visual computing, including computer graphics and geometry processing, computer vision and image processing, visualization and visual analytics, augmented and virtual reality, machine and deep learning, inverse problems and medical imaging.

The new institute is committed to excellence in basic research, but industry-related research also plays an important role. The establishment of the new institute with a critical mass of researchers will also further boost existing cooperations with the research centers Fraunhofer Austria and VRVis located at TU Graz, and of course we are looking forward to new collaborations.

The Institute of Visual Computing will be headed by Thomas Pock and Tobias Schreck.

Institute of Algorithms and Theory (ATCS)

The Institute of Algorithms and Theory (ATCS) focuses on both classical and modern algorithm design, along with the foundational principles of computer science.

Research@ATCS spans classical and modern algorithm design, distributed computing, and massively parallel systems. Building on TU Graz's strong history in computational geometry, we continue to advance this field. In general theoretical computer science (TCS) and related fields have a strong presence at TU Graz.

Yannic Maus is the institute's head.
