Hosted by the Doctoral School of Architecture, the second PHD Day of 2024 took place on July 3, 2024, and was conceptualized by the Institute of Architecture Technology under the direction of Matthias Lang-Raudaschl. Seven doctoral students presented their doctoral theses' main research questions and methods, which primarily pursued sustainable and technological approaches to architecture. The dissertation projects dealt with themes ranging from the planning of urban space in times of mobility transition and climate change (Sabine Bauer: “Influence of Planning Culture on the Design of Mobility Spaces”, Mario Stefan: “Implementation of Blue-Green Infrastructures with Quality of Stay in Peri-Urban Space”) over the conception of architecture as a body of material landscape (Mercedes Peralta: “Architecture as a Body of Material Landscapes: The Case of the Palacio de las Aguas Corrientes”) to the development of planning tools for a sustainable circular economy (Lukas Gschweitl: “ReUse with BIM: Connecting Architectural Salvage Centers to your BIM Software”), addressed problems of compliance with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change (Carlos Enrique Caballero Guereca: “Paris Goal-Compatibility in LCA-Based Methods: Aligning the Building and Real Estate Sectors against Climate Change”) and the Austrian CO2 budget (Nicolas Alaux: “Identification of Future Trajectories for Carbon Budget Compliant Buildings: An Austrian Perspective”), or examined the influence of artificial intelligence on the design process (Adam Sebestyen: “Combining Deep Learning and Parametric Models for the Early Stage Digital Design Exploration Process”). The PHD-Day provided a comprehensive insight into the current architectural discourse and the broad research spectrum at the Faculty of Architecture.
