The Department for Computer Science and Biomedical Engineering at Graz University of Technology invites applications for the position of a

Tenure Track Professor of Machine Learning (m/f/d) 

We are looking for a candidate with proven scientific expertise in the field of "Machine Learning" in research and teaching. Applications from the following areas are welcome. In particular, they should conduct basic research in this area in the overlapping field of sub-symbolic and symbolic Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the prestigious Cluster of Excellence Bilateral AI.

Job Description

The following topics are of particular interest:

  • Brain-inspired Machine Learning
  • Deep Learning with symbolic components
  • Generative Deep Learning
  • Neurosymbolic AI
  • Privacy-preserving and explainable AI
  • Trustworthy and robust Machine Learning
  • Causality
  • Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in combination with Machine Learning

The successful candidate will cover one of these areas or another area of Machine Learning that complements the existing strengths of the department. The professorship will be part of the Institute for Institute of Theoretical Computer Science, which is an internationally renowned research institution that conducts basic research in the area of Machine Learning,  Computational Neuroscience,  Brain-inspired principles of computation and learning, as well as Probilistic Machine Learning . The institute has been active in these fields for more than 30 years.

The new professor will complement the existing strengths in the department, will build an internationally visible group, and will be an engaged teacher in the Computer Science programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD level, and will actively participate in academic self-administration. At Graz University of Technology, undergraduate courses are taught in German or English and graduate courses are taught in English. 

The advertised position is a tenure-track career position. (pursuant to § 99 para. 5 of the Universities Act) After the conclusion of a qualification agreement, the job holder is appointed as an Assistant Professor. After a positive evaluation of the qualification agreement, the position will be turned into a position as Associate Professor.

  • A completed university education with a doctoral degree (PhD) in a relevant field.
  • Proven publication activity in the field of machine learning.

  • Excellent command of English and command of German or the willingness to acquire it.
