Initiated by the Institute for Urbanism, the online symposium entitled “Where City and Territory Meet…,” held on September 16th and 17th, 2021 brought together members of the faculty and international guests. The keynote speakers were Aglaée Degros (Head of the Institute for Urbanism, TU Graz), Marcel Smets (formerly KU Leuven), Eva Schwab (Institute of Urbanism, TU Graz) and Markus Bogensberger (State of Styria, Department 16 Transport and Building Construction). The symposium’s extensive program included paper presentation sessions, video presentations and a closing plenary panel with the honorary guest speaker Han Meyer (formerly TU Delft). Taking current and historic urban and rural projects as a base to move beyond a reconsideration of the profession’s fundamental goals and means, theoretical, practical, methodological and empirical contributions from a variety of disciplines were discussed, that look at how the ongoing public discourse manifests itself in space. The projects and contributions provided new insights and possibilities on how influences––be they of ecological, economic, cultural, social or political nature––can reposition urban design as part of the territorial project. The results and detailed material of the presented papers are freely accessible on the institute’s homepage.
