ITE project "Concrete Lightweight Ceiling" wins Architekturpreis Beton 2023! Congratulations to Stefan Peters and his team at the Institute of Structural Design!
For the development of a 160m2 weight-reduced reinforced concrete ceiling over an underground car park entrance in Nördlingen (DE), the project team of the ITE was awarded the German prize for concrete architecture (Architekturpreis Beton 2023). The ITE team which was responsible for the design, geometry development, structural analysis as well as bending tests, was able to convince the jury with a material-optimized, resource-saving and unusual type of construction.
The optimized ceiling consists of 168 printed concrete segments and was joined to 48 elongated recess bodies on the construction site. Through 3D printing and the use of a cement-reduced concrete formula for the grouting concrete, 35% CO2 eq could be saved. The innovation of the reinforced concrete floor lies not only in the significant CO2 reduction but at the same time in the load-bearing capacity and usability of the design. According to the jury, “this work shows that the future can lie in printing concrete. Valuable material is used consciously and sparingly. Here, concrete is used where it is absolutely necessary."
The project was carried out in cooperation with EIGNER Bauunternehmung GmbH, Baumit GmbH, Engelsmann Peters GmbH and Märker Transportbeton.
