Fabienne Hoelzel | FABULOUS URBAN | Zürich

Fabienne Hoelzel is Professor of Urban Design at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design and the founding director of FABULOUS URBAN, a design, research and planning practice for less developed regions. She worked for one of Latin America‘s largest slum-upgrading programs as the head of the urban design and planning team at the Social Housing and Urban Development Authority of São Paulo, Brazil, which was awarded the UN Habitat Scroll of Honor in 2012 for its pioneering work. From 2008 to 2010 and from 2013 to 2017, Fabienne held a research and teaching position at the Institute of Urban Design at the ETH Zurich, where she was also the Academic Co-Project Manager of 2017 Schindler Global Award and the co-editor of the accompanying publication by the same name. She lectures and writes on a regular base. FABULOUS URBAN is currently involved in the Makoko Regeneration Plan for Lagos, Nigeria, that was shortlisted for the 2014 Fuller Challenge, and recently implemented the pilot Makoko Neighborhood Hotspot for a multipurpose community center. Commissioned by the Heinrich Böll Foundation Nigeria, Fabienne coordinated and published the research “Urban Planning Processes in Lagos. Policies, laws, planning instruments, strategies and actors of urban projects, urban development, and urban services in Africa’s largest city”, in collaboration with local researchers and urban planning students of the University of Lagos. FABULOUS URBAN is further involved in a series of community empowering sanitation solutions in several slum areas in Lagos, in collaboration with the Nigerian Slum/ Informal Settlement Federation and JEI.

John Palmesino | Territorial Agency | London

John Palmesino is an architect and urbanist, born in Switzerland. Together with Ann-Sofi Rönnskog, he established Territorial Agency, an organisation that designed the integrated vision for the future of the Markermeer, in the Netherlands. He is in charge of the Master course at the Research Architecture Centre at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he is also conducting research for his PhD. He is the initiator and curator of the research project "Neutrality," a multidisciplinary investigation into the territorial implications of UN policies and self-organisation processes of transformation and control of the contemporary human landscapes. From 2003 - 2007 he was head of research of the Studio Basel / Contemporary City Institute at ETH Zürich, a research platform for the investigation of the transformation patterns of the city of the twenty-first century (founded by the Pritzker Prize-winning architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron.) Recent publications inlcude Switzerland – An Urban Portrait (Birkhäuser, 2007). His research at ETH Studio Basel focuses on Paris, Napoli, San Francisco, St Petersburg, Hong Kong, and the Canary Islands. Open and Closed: Transformations in the 21st Century City is the working title of his forthcoming publication. He also has co-founded multiplicity, a research network on contemporary territorial transformations. The Milan-based organisation deals with contemporary urbanism, representation of inhabited landscape transformation, visual arts and general culture. Multiplicity is a research network of architects, urbanists, social scientists, photographers, filmmakers and visual artists. 

His work has been exhibited at documenta11, the Biennale di Venezia, the Triennale in Milano, the KunstWerke, Berlin, the Musée d’Art Contemporaine de Paris, the Vanabbe Museum in Eindhoven, and IABR Rotterdam.

Marianne Skjulhaug | OCULS | Oslo

Marianne Skjulhaug is head of the Institute of Urbanism and Landscape at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design (AHO). She is trained as an architect and has years of experience in urban planning and urban design from practice, including for the City of Bergen, Asplan Viak and Norconsult. She was the Rector of the Bergen School of Architecture from 2007 to 2012, and has lectured and served as examiner at several institution including GSD Harvard, Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture,Chalmers, KTH and NTNU. She serves as the Vice President at EuropanNorway, Board Member for Asplan Viak (stiftelsesstyre), Advisory Board memberat Arkitektur, KTH, and sits on the Nordic Council for Green Buildings. She is also an active voice in the public debate on urban spatial development.
