This research project investigates the potentials of specific vertical farm typologies with respect to energy efficient synergy potentials in connection with the urban environment. The integration of agricultural production is argued on the basis of effective per capita land consumption. For Austria, the required areas are calculated at approximately 45m² per capita for living, 10m² for offices, or 5m² for the industry. However, food production consumes the highest proportion of land, requiring area amounting to approximately 2,300 m² per capita and year. Various different utilisation periods of urban programmes and functions and the inclusion of vertical farming open up a new field for basic research with the aim of increasing the overall energy efficiency of cities.
