In cooperation with the Montanuniversität Leoben, the IEE was involved in the integrated Austrian network infrastructure plan.

The integrated Austrian network infrastructure plan (NIP) represents a strategic planning instrument that enables a comprehensive consideration of the infrastructure needs of the future energy system. This plan can be used to derive which energy infrastructure is required for the transformation of the energy sector. The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology (BMK) is thus presenting a planning basis for the expansion and modernization of the energy transmission infrastructure by 2030 and for achieving climate neutrality by 2040. The holistic view of the higher-level energy transmission for electricity, gas and hydrogen is intended to ensure that the expansion of renewable energy generation is optimally coordinated with the development of the network, storage capacities and flexibility options.

The Chair for Energy Network Technology at the MU Leoben and the Institute for Electricity Economics and Energy Innovation at the TU Graz were commissioned by the Ministry of Climate Protection (BMK) to calculate a NIP scenario using the method used in the InfraTrans2040 project. Both the results from the InfraTrans2040 project and the results of the NIP scenario were included in the integrated Austrian network infrastructure plan.
