The energy planner is a user-friendly Excel tool designed to illustrate the relationships within the energy system and energy system planning for both young and old. The goal is to develop an understanding of the wide range of decision-making options involved in the expansion and transformation of the energy system by determining the optimal energy mix for a fictional test city.

The energy transition presents us with significant challenges. One of the key tasks is to find the optimal, meaning the most sustainable and cost-effective, pathway for expanding our energy system. At the Institute of Electricity Economics and Energy Innovation, we focus on the central question: "How will the sustainable energy system of the future be created?" To address this, we employ mathematical modeling and optimization.

To illustrate these challenges for all age groups, we have created a miniature model for hands-on experimentation. In this model, users can design the energy system themselves! The model can be downloaded here for personal use (MS Excel is required to run it). A brief introduction and user guide are also available for download.
