The aim of this study is to determine the short-, medium- and long-term energy storage requirements in the Austrian electricity system 2040.

Both Austria's and European goals for the decarbonization of our energy systems rely on the increased electrification of e.g. transport, heat, industrial processes, etc. National energy policy goals, such as the planned expansion paths of the Renewable Expansion Act (EAG), focus on the expansion of renewable energy sources (wind, PV, water, biomass), however, do not quantify the performance or energy-related capacities of storage technologies (in addition to those installed to date) that would be necessary to achieve the complete climate neutrality of the Austrian electricity system.
