Franz Thaler is a PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Horst Bischof at the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision at the Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) and collaborates closely with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Clinical Forensic Imaging and the Medical University of Graz. He graduated with a master's degree in Software Engineering and Management from TU Graz with specialization in Computer Vision and Computer Graphics as well as Economics in 2019. In his dissertation on Semantic Image Segmentation by Deep Active Learning in medical imaging applications, novel methods are investigated to reduce the annotation effort of large datasets with the long-term goal of bridging the existing gap between research results in semantic segmentation and their commercial application. In synergy with his previous work his primary research interests consolidate to medical imaging and computer vision as well as to machine and especially deep learning.
