Despite its omnipresence, exposed concrete is hardly met with indifference. Ever since its revival towards the end of the 19th century, concrete has absorbed all sorts of symbolic connotations, even on the political level. That ability to absorb meanings results from the fact that concrete is a social construct in which economic and social factors have at least as much influence as possible technical developments. These associative cultural level of concrete is documented and analysed in this research project. All results are disseminated in both architecture-specific and multidisciplinary publications and conferences.
