The computer controlled micromill device (ESI, Portland) facilitates a semi-automatic extraction of tiny (<1 mg) and constant (precise control of x-y-z position) amounts of powder from solid sample surfaces.
Typical applications include the milling of high spatial resolution (down to 50 µm) sample transects from gradually formed mineral deposits, sedimentary layers or altered cross-sections. The sample powders are transferred to various vials, e.g. for subsequent chemical or isotopic analyses.
