Laser Ablation - Multi Collector - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS)

This is a cooperation within NAWI Graz.

Laser ablation (LA) is the process of particle removal by a focused laser beam. Laser Ablation coupled with a Multi Collector - Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometer (LA-MC-ICP-MS) combines the benefits of high precision isotope analysis and in-situ sampling.

MC-ICP-MS is a double focussing magnetic sector instrument that allows the simultaneous measurement of several isotopes of an element at high precision. The instrument is equipped with sixteen Faraday detectors and up to five ion-counting electron multipliers.

Geochronological applications include U-Pb dating of zircon (monazite and rutile under development).
