A steel striker bar is accelerated by a spring force, impacting the surface of the tested material (e.g. rock, concrete). The striker rebound distance is proportional to Young’s modulus and inversely proportional to plastic deformation of the material. Under certain conditions the rebound distance can be used as an index for estimating the uniaxial compressive strength of the material.
