This symposium presents the research results obtained by a team of 40 researchers in the first TU Graz LEAD Project entitled "Dependable Internet of Things in Adverse Environments" during its six years of funding.

The IoT is a key enabling technology for application domains with very high societal relevance and impact, including smart cities, smart cars, smart health, smart factories, and smart buildings. All these applications are only feasible if the underlying Internet of Things doesn’t fail, as failures may lead to disastrous real-world impact.

The "3rd Symposium on Dependable Internet of Things in Adverse Environments" aims at discussing concepts, methods, and tools to predict, guarantee, and ultimately raise the level of dependability of the IoT, where dependability summarizes all attributes of a system that allow a user to put trust into and rely on the system, to systematically construct a dependable IoT that is resilient against failures due to adverse environments. Adverse environments pose the IoT with a range of physical and man-made treats, including harsh environmental conditions (for example, unpredictable wireless signal propagation and strong interference from other wireless transmitters), physical and remote attacks, and the inherent complexity of a system of systems.

The symposium will address the scientific challenges associated with a dependable IoT from three different directions, highlighting the multi-disciplinary nature of this research topic:

  • "Dependable Wireless Communication and Localization" addressing dependability of wireless communication and localization;
  • "Verified Dependability by Design" placing its focus on formal methods to prove the correctness and security of the IoT;
  • "Dependable Multi-Agent Systems" being concerned with the dependability of robotic teams using networked control and AI techniques.

The symposium is a single-day event organized by the LEAD Project "Dependable Internet of Things in Adverse Environments", which has been funded through an excellence initiative sponsored by TU Graz to foster excellent research areas of strategic importance. The symposium will comprise an invited keynote presentation and scientific presentations, posters, and demonstrators by project members and associated researchers.
