The climate emergency is causing a full transformation of the Alpine territories as we know them. This change affects both the landscapes and the living conditions of human and non-human actors.
The decline in snowfall, even at high altitudes, is just one of the changes that are having a major impact on the ecosystem and putting economic pressure on many mountain regions in Styria. In the Altitude 1000 studio, we ask ourselves what a future for and in these areas could look like and develop strategies for the necessary transition Specifically, we will be looking at the municipality of Oberwölz, which is home to the well-known Lachtal ski tourism area in the eastern foothills of the Alps in the district of Murau in Styria.
Over the course of the semester, we will develop a development strategy for the municipality and gradually work on individual sub-areas in more detail for each group. It remains a particular challenge to cope with the complex interplay of changes in landscape, settlement development and economy. Throughout the semester we are working together with the master's studio at the AmsterdamAcademy of Architecture, which is also devoting its current semester to this topic.
