Spectroscopy is a powerful measurement tool for properties like absorption, transmission, and reflectivity of different materials.
Two spectrometer systems are available at IES:
With the employment of different fibers, probes and various optical equipment, different setups are realizable with these spectrometers. Our measurement systems are set up with interchangeable components, which provides high flexibility for the alignment to the application.
Reflectance spectroscopy is applied for the characterization of different materials, such as coatings, windows, filters and pigments. Recorded spectra allow determination of thicknesses, refractive indices as well as material composition by the analyzation of specific absorption bands in diffusive reflectance measurements. Especially reflectance measurements can be easily performed with the application of a bifurcated reflection probe bundle, because further optical alignment is not necessary. The corresponding setup with the FT-NIR spectrometer is shown in the picture above.
Transmittance and absorbance measurements can be implemented with fiber couplers and allow different analyzation methods. For example, it is used in gas analysis for the characterization of specific absorption bands.
