Industrial project successfully completed

03.04.2025

The FFG Frontrunner project “Glycerol to Propanol” has successfully been completed at the end of March.

The project, a collaboration between OMV Downstream GmbH, TU Wien and CEET, involved the construction of a pilot plant at the Schwechat refinery site to produce second-generation biofuels using a specially developed, patented process. These are advanced biofuels that do not compete with foodstuffs. Using a typical refinery process, the waste-based raw material glycerine is refined into bio-alcohol, which as a fuel additive reduces the CO2 emissions of petrol.

The picture shows some of the protagonists in front of the completed plant. From CEET: Susanne Lux (first from the right), Max Vogi (6th from the left), and Thomas Wallek (5th from the left).
