Laboratory Stremayrgasse

The large research hall is vertically structured. The research area on the ground floor is approximately 1,100 m², and its largest length for use is 60 meters. This provides an environment that makes possible an undistorted model of hydro power plants on large rivers (such as the Danube) including the necessary tie-in sections. A giant stairway connects the area of low head testing facilities with the 9 meters beneath smaller area of higher head test possibilities. One elevated tank feeding both laboratory areas with a cubic capacity of 70 m³ ensures a maximum stationary pressure head of 15 Meter and enables thus the conduct of research which needs due to its reference to the Reynolds' number large amounts of water demanding a consistent pressure head. The stairway-shaped connection of both laboratory areas serves the construction of special models. The core of the research water power plant is a central pump station which consists of four simultaneous units with a pumping capacity of up to 1000 l/s. These pumps transport water over a collecting pipe and two standpipes mounting pillars into the already mentioned elevated tank. An overflow-length of approximately 100 meters guarantees, also with highly unstable operational conditions, a sufficient consistency of the water-table. The feed pipe of water to the single research models succeeds in four pipe lines with the nominal diameters DN 350 and DN 250, of which the two larger ones are connected in a ring-shape while the other two stub lines approximately in the third of the length. Immediately below the floor concrete return channels are arranged. These channels surround the entire low head area, in the shape of an open rectangle, and which discharge selectively into the settling tank, respectivley the recirculation system. The completion of the recirculation system presents the low head - lower tank with a capacity of 465 m³. In the medium head area a lower tank with the capacity of about 90 m³ is at disposal. Several pumps can be connected selectively with suction-sided collecting pipes. Counter-locked fittings in the suction lines are to prevent circulation between these two tanks. Another slide combination enables a pressure-sided, and direct connection between the pumps and the models.
