WS 24/25 E1 - ReSOURCEing

As part of Design 1, we are addressing the increasing challenges facing Graz's sewer system, particularly in the area around the Herz-Jesu Church and the Leonhardbach stream. The increasing sealing of the ground means that rainwater can no longer seep away sufficiently and the existing sewer system is overloaded. Earlier rainwater overflows into the Mur are no longer possible due to the build-up, which underlines the need for a qualified combined sewer system. The overloaded Gössendorf sewage treatment plant and the backwater problems of the Grazbach stream exacerbate the situation.

Our project focuses on innovative urban development concepts that use the rediscovery of water as an opportunity for the development of the area. The integration of open channels and visible water surfaces not only makes drainage more efficient, but also has a positive impact on the urban climate. These measures create green recreational spaces and contribute to cooling the urban environment. Water is used as a central design element to improve the quality of life and enhance the urban environment both functionally and aesthetically. In Design 1, we are developing solutions for the redesign of the area around the Church of the Sacred Heart. The creation of open watercourses reduces the risk of flooding and sustainably improves the urban climate.
