The Institute of Discrete Mathematics emerged from the Mathematics II and III departments. Mathematics II existed under different names and included "practical geometry" (geodesy) from 1841-1959. The holders were Florian Schindler (1842-1845), Friedrich Hartner (1845-1851), Josef Herr (1853-1858), Anton Winckler (1859-1866), Moritz Allé (1867-1882), Gustav Escherich (1883-1885), Franz Mertens (1885-1894), Oskar Peithner (1894-1921), Bernhard Baule (1921-1938), Lother Koschmieder (1939-1945), Bernhard Baule (1945-1962), Wolfgang Hahn (1964-1981), Rainer Burkard (1982-2011).
The Chair of Mathematics III was founded in 1971 and occupied by Rudolf Domiaty (1971-1997).
