DIGIVID

Digital Competences Unleashed: Education and Training of Digital Competences in the era of CoVid-19

About DIGIVID

Information literacy and digital competences are considered as fundamental competencies like the ability to read, write and calculate. The UNESCO (Catts & Lau, 2008) considers it “a basic human right” while the ALA (American Library Association, 2006) calls it a “survival skill in the information age”. In the digital era, information literacy and digital competences are social key competences in technology-enhanced learning settings as well as in educational/professional environments.

This holds especially true during the current CoVid-19 pandemic, where on short notice a sudden shift from traditional face-to-face to online teaching and learning took place. This shift poses challenges especially for instructors in schools and universities as well as (teacher-)students, who suddenly had to orient themselves in a completely new situation of teaching and learning, many of them possessing only very basic knowledge and skills w.r.t. teaching and learning in online and virtual environments. This is particularly true for inclusive teaching to enable all students to participate in learning activities. Since the switch had to happen almost immediately, instructors and (teacher-)students did not have the time to acquire profound knowledge and skills for navigating the digital world and making use of the different opportunities that online-teaching and learning provide.

The DIGIVID Erasmus+ Project – is aiming at supporting individuals such as instructors in schools and universities and teacher-students in acquiring and developing digital skills and key competences to improve their (inclusive) online teaching and learning. To do so, we plan to develop the DIGIVID Curriculum based upon the DigComp 2.1 and DigCompEdu frameworks and enhanced with content for inclusive online teaching and learning strategies. Additionally, we will develop the DIGIVIDget – a teaching and learning widget that visualises the content of the DIGIVID Curriculum along learning goals (stating what skills/competences can/should be acquired) and, thus, making the DIGIVID Curriculum easily accessible to our target users.

DIGIVID Objectives

DIGIVIDGET DIGIVID Curriculum
  • Presents the learning content about digital competences for teaching and learning along learning goals.
  • Offers the possibility to track one’s learning progress.
  • Is easy to use on the web and mobile devices.
  • Consists of learning content in form of a curriculum for motivational online teaching and learning strategies
  • Is based upon the major competences of the DigComp 2.1 and DigCompEdu Frameworks including well-formulated and target-oriented learning goals.

DIGIVID Beneficiaries

  • DIRECT: In-service teachers, lecturers and teacher-students at universities and teacher colleges in Austria, Germany and Norway.
  • INDIRECT: elementary and secondary school students taught by the in- and pre-service teachers directly addressed; stakeholders and employers related to teaching/educational institutes and environments.

Project Results

The project results including the DIGIVIDget and the DIGIVID Curriculum can be found at:

DIGIVID Outreach Events

Our dissemination activities are tailored to make people aware of the project and to increase the project’s visibility in DIGIVID’s target groups and also beyond. Each partner will participate in the project’s dissemination plan and will perform a number of activities in order to ensure the widest possible spreading in each participating country as well as on an European level.
Our activities include co-design workshops, multiplier events conducted in all participating countries, as well as scientific publications and participation in conferences etc.

  1. DIGIVID Workshop @ EC-TEL 2021: 21st September 2021 - 9:00-12:00

This workshop is open to all EC-TEL participants who want to share and reflect on their experiences with learning and teaching in the CoVid-19 Pandemic.
Therefore, we would like to invite you to this workshop to actively share experiences, reflect on lessons learned to improve your future practices in online teaching and learning. This includes also the digital skills you need to acquire during the pandemic and that you might improve for the future.

DIGIVID Impact

Impact for target groups:

  • More efficient learning by using the DIGIVIDget: educators and teacher-students can benefit from the meaningful integration of the information literacy education in relation to online teaching and learning as they can easily become information literate and digitally competent alongside their usual studies to conduct and/or participate in online courses. This further education is needed in order to still be able to actively participate in teaching and learning especially caused by the sudden shift from face-to-face to online on short notice. The DIGIVID approach is tailored to the effects of the CoVID-19 focuses on keeping the quality of education high for all stakeholders involved.
  • Effective acquisition of (digital) competences with DIGIVIDget: DIGIVID will provide a learning solution that enables learners to shift from face-to-face to online teaching and learning with only little (or no) negative influence for their further education. DIGIVID aims at effective and efficient acquisition of new digital competences that allow educators and teacher-students to quickly adapt to the new online and digital circumstances.

Impact for other relevant stakeholders:

  • Broaden the education in digital competences to a wider uptake by potential target users: Our partners and the target groups of the project represent only a low percentage of possible target users but they cover a broad range of participants regarding age and disciplines. In combination with the widget and the content created, the DIGIVID approach is expected to be easily transferable to other universities or other higher educational institutions. Through the in-service and pre-service teachers involved in the project, DIGIVID will also affect students in the elementary and secondary schools. Furthermore, the DIGIVID approach is also easily transferable to the domain of adult education and organisational training.
