The student team consisting of Hanna Gletthofer, Kilian Hoffmann and Simon Winter was awarded 3rd prize at the symposium of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) 2021 for their innovative pavilion.
The design concept for the award-winning project "WAUXI - Wall Auxetic Structure Installation" was developed as part of the course "Supporting Structures in Design" in the winterterm 20/21 at the Institute of Structural Design under the direction of Christoph Holzinger and David Gierlinger in the wintersemester 2020/21 and was further developed independently by the students.
"WAUXI" is a double-shell wall construction made of Y-shaped plywood elements and triangular flexible parts, based on the concept of Auxetic Structures. These are geometric shapes that expand evenly when force is applied without becoming distorted. Thus, these lightweight constructions can be delivered flat. They only develop their final size and curvature on site. This makes transport much easier and has a positive effect on the environment. The special feature of the project is that the flat wall deforms into a pavilion by means of a pulley mechanism.
