Between May and July one of our university assistants, David Cardona-Vásquez, visited the Instituto de Investigación Tecnológica from Universidad Pontificia de Comillas in Madrid, Spain.
There, he worked alongside Jose Portela on applying machine learning to develop new algorithms that improve the computational tractability of optimization models used in power systems research.
As a result of this collaboration, they found new ways to exploit the interplay between input data and the optimization model’s structure to identify better ways to decompose and aggregate certain types of models, while maintaining the solution’s accuracy.
This work is part of the ERC-funded starting grant NetZero-Opt awarded to Sonja Wogrin in 2024.
