The building and construction sector is responsible for nearly 40% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions. Understanding, measuring, and predicting their environmental impacts is of utmost importance. This course introduces building sustainability and life cycle assessment (LCA), covering the history of labels and certifications, tools for measuring sustainability, and challenges in the field. It aims to foster critical thinking in designers, helping them interpret labels, choose materials, components, and suppliers, and consider the environmental impact of their designs.

This lecture is to familiarise students with the basics of software-based Building Information Modelling (BIM). Successful participants can develop virtual building models in a manner that is suitable for architects and civil engineers and creating constructional planning documents from them. Through this know-how students gain understanding about the design and coordination of digital value-creation-processes, the initiation and management of BIM-projects.

This course familiarizes students with the fundamentals of software-based building modeling. With successful participation, they are able to develop digital building models in a BIM process suitable for architects and civil engineers, to create structural engineering design documents and to fundamentally evaluate the digital building model. Based on this knowledge, students will gain an understanding of the design of digital value creation processes.

In this course students will learn the methods of sustainability assessment of buildings and urban quarters. Different building certification systems and methods and methods such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCCA) are introduced and applied. Students will gain a better understanding of measurable criteria of sustainability assessment in building design and development.

Systems Thinking in Architecture
Sustainable Development Goals in practical application
The United Nations 2030 Agenda includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) and proposes a global plan to promote sustainable peace, prosperity and to protect our planet. In this course, the SDG's will be considered from an architectural perspective using practical examples. Systems thinking and an interdisciplinary approach will be encouraged.
